La Mouette: A Review

Home of cheese and truffle croquettes and of course Twitterati Parties, the dream team behind La Mouette have kicked-off the winter specials season early. Set in a courtyard with dappled sunshine, romantic fountain, friendly service and just plain delicious food, this French-inspired eatery in Sea Point has a special place in my heart.

Husband and wife team, Chef Henry and Mari, are offering an impressive two-for-one tasting menu special for just R240 throughout April. The six-course menu includes the croquettes (of course, check out how to make the famous croquettes), a ‘Bloody Mary’ spiced jelly with tomato espuma, butternut soup with gorgonzola and sage, roasted line fish with crushed potatoes and tender confit lamb with a hearty cassoulet.

To finish off, how about a crunchy cappuccino ice cream served with the lightest French doughnuts frosted with sugary crystals?

Besides being a feast for the tastebuds, it’s a feast for the senses with fresh colouring, artful presentation and all served with bright shining eyes.

The team at La Mouette allow you to completely relax. There is something about the courtyard that transports me from Sea Point to an idyllic oasis of French-inspired calm and tranquillity. It’s masterful. It’s effortless. It’s restorative. It made me smile from the belly up.

At R240 for two people with 6 courses each, the autumnal tasting menu is great value. At that price we didn’t bat an eye lid at including the wine pairing option (R160 per person) which showcased some of our local talents.

All in all, a great afternoon was had. Another trip before the season is out is certainly on the cards.
