MasterChef South Africa: your thoughts so far?

MasterChef South Africa is well and truly underway and four episodes in, verdicts are flying. Popular with some and completely missing on the radar of others – like Gareth Cliff, who on Monday had not yet watched an episode – what do you think?
The show flights weekly on M-Net at 19h30 and last night’s episode gave us our first look at the official MasterChef South Africa Kitchen on the Nederburg Wine Estate in Paarl. Following in the footsteps of MasterChef Australia’s kitchen, it didn’t disappoint and had an impressive hoard of tools awaiting wielding on the counter-tops. We spotted tools from the likes of Global, Le Creuset and Smeg, fine weapons for the culinary battle that followed.
Last night the remaining 18 contestants fought tooth and nail to stay in the competition and were tasked with showing the judges ‘where their culinary journey began’ and to somehow put their ‘soul on the plate’. There were some definite hits, but is the standard as high as it should be? Do the contestants deserve a break as it’s just the beginning?
As for the judges… they’ve got a tough job. Competing in MasterChef South Africa is challenging but when it comes to the calibre of judges, we wonder if our SA judges will match the likes of Gary, Matt and George. Was it fair last night that there was a double elimination? So long Fortune. Nice knowing you, Charles.

There’s a way to go yet and the ante is certainly being upped every week. We’re enjoying what we think is a rather slick production, putting SA’s rich and diverse culinary talent on the map. Your thoughts?
